The Japan Football Museum in Ochanomizu covers a football culture that is younger than most and grew extraordinarily fast. Japan had no professional league until the J.League launched in 1993; nine years later the country co-hosted the World Cup with South Korea, and the national teams have since become fixtures at the top level — the women's side winning the World Cup in 2011, months after the earthquake and tsunami, in a victory that carried enormous national weight.
The museum covers that trajectory with the 2002 World Cup as its centrepiece, alongside the J.League, the national teams and the earlier amateur era. Trophies, shirts, footage and interactive displays fill the space, and the Japan Football Hall of Fame occupies part of it.
It sits beneath the Japan Football Association headquarters, and periodically closes or changes format around JFA building works, so checking current status before travelling is worthwhile.
