The Musée de l'Illusion opened near the Forum des Halles in 2019 with over 60 installations built around perception: holograms, stereograms, an Ames room that makes people change size as they cross it, a rotating vortex tunnel, an infinity room, and tables of mechanical puzzles. Explanatory panels cover the science — how the visual system infers depth, why the brain resolves ambiguity the way it does — which gives it more substance than pure photo attractions, though the photography is clearly the main draw.

It runs about an hour and suits families, groups and wet Paris afternoons. Central location makes it easy to slot into a day around Châtelet and the Marais.

As with all illusion museums, each exhibit has one correct viewing position, so the rooms bottleneck when the museum is full — weekday and early slots are considerably calmer.
