Musée Jacquemart-André

The Musée Jacquemart-André, located at 158 Boulevard Haussmann in Paris’s 8th arrondissement, is a museum housed in a 19th-century mansion. It showcases a renowned art collection amassed by Édouard André and Nélie Jacquemart, featuring works from the Italian Renaissance and 18th-century French art. The museum offers guided tours, audio guides, a café, and a gift shop for visitors.

The Jacquemart-André is the finest private collection in Paris still shown in the house built for it. Édouard André, heir to a banking fortune, and Nélie Jacquemart, the painter he commissioned for his portrait and later married, spent decades acquiring across Europe and left the mansion and everything in it to the Institut de France on her death in 1912.

The Italian holdings are exceptional — Uccello, Botticelli, Mantegna and Bellini, displayed in a purpose-built "Italian museum" upstairs reached by a double-spiral staircase. The state apartments below hold Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Boucher, Fragonard and Tiepolo, whose fresco covers the staircase ceiling, all within rooms preserved as the couple arranged them: a winter garden of marble and glass, a smoking room, a music room.

The café occupies the former dining room under another Tiepolo ceiling, and is one of the more agreeable places to eat in the 8th arrondissement.

The scale is manageable — around ninety minutes — which makes it a good counterweight to the Louvre. Audio guides are included with tickets and worth using, since the house's arrangement is personal rather than didactic.
