The Museum of Arts and Design occupies a controversial building on Columbus Circle — a 1964 Edward Durell Stone structure known as the lollipop building, radically remodelled in 2008 over the objections of preservationists, and now a slotted white tower facing Central Park.
The museum's subject is the ground between art, craft and design: contemporary practice in glass, ceramics, metal, wood, fibre and newer materials, presented on the argument that material knowledge and making are as intellectually serious as concept.
