Romania's version of the period was harsher than most of the Eastern Bloc: Ceaușescu's austerity programme to repay the national debt in the 1980s produced rationing, unheated apartments and hours-long queues, ending in the violent revolution of December 1989. The museum is small and can be seen in under an hour, but it is unusually good at conveying texture that statistics do not.
