The Risorgimento museum occupies Palazzo Carignano, and the building is the exhibit: Victor Emmanuel II was born here, the first Italian parliament sat in its chamber, and the Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed from this address in 1861. It is the only museum in Italy officially designated as the national museum of unification.
The collection covers the long process from the Napoleonic period through the revolutions of 1848, the wars of independence, Garibaldi's expedition and the annexation of Rome in 1870 — weapons, flags, uniforms, documents, paintings and personal effects of the protagonists.
The chamber of the first parliament, preserved as it was, is the emotional centre.
Turin was the first capital of united Italy, which is why the institution is here rather than in Rome, and the city's arcaded streets and cafés date largely from that period.
