POLIN's core exhibition is deliberately not a Holocaust museum, and that decision defines the visit. Eight galleries trace a thousand years of Jewish life in Poland: the first medieval merchants arriving along trade routes, the flourishing of Jewish culture under the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth when Poland held the largest Jewish population in the world, the shtetl and the cities, the nineteenth-century arguments between tradition and modernity, the destruction of the war years, and the complicated postwar decades. The reconstructed painted ceiling and bimah of the seventeenth-century Gwoździec synagogue, rebuilt using period tools and techniques, is the centrepiece. The building stands in the former Warsaw Ghetto, facing the Ghetto Heroes Monument.

The point of the structure is that it restores a civilisation before showing its destruction, so the loss registers as the loss of something specific. The exhibition is large, text-heavy and immersive, and three hours is a realistic minimum. Audio guides are available in many languages and are genuinely necessary given the volume of material.
