STRAAT Museum

Located in a former shipyard warehouse in Amsterdam-Noord, STRAAT Museum is the world’s largest street art museum, featuring monumental murals and installations by international artists. STRAAT solves a problem street art has always had: the work is temporary by nature, painted over or demolished, and photographs lose the scale entirely. The museum, opened in 2020 in a vast former shipbuilding warehouse at NDSM Wharf in Amsterdam-Noord, commissions artists to paint monumental canvases — some eight metres tall — inside the hall, so the work survives at full size in the industrial space it belongs in. Over 170 works by artists from more than 30 countries hang from the roof structure and line the walls.

The building is the point as much as the art. The NDSM shipyard was one of the largest in the world before it closed, and the surrounding wharf is now a sprawl of squats, studios, container architecture and street art painted directly onto the derelict structures — which means the neighbourhood outside is a continuation of the museum inside.

Getting there is half the appeal: a free ferry runs from behind Amsterdam Centraal across the IJ, taking about fifteen minutes.
