Planning your visit

The Albertina occupies the largest surviving Habsburg residential palace in Vienna, on a bastion above the Opera, and its identity has shifted considerably over the past two decades. Historically it was a graphic arts collection — one of the largest and finest in the world, holding around a million prints and 60,000 drawings, including the great Durer watercolours.

Those works are too fragile for permanent display, so what visitors actually see is a rotating exhibition programme drawing on them, alongside the Batliner Collection of classical modernism — Monet, Degas, Picasso, Chagall, Kandinsky and the German Expressionists — which hangs more or less permanently and is the reason many people visit.

The restored Habsburg state rooms are included with admission and are frequently overlooked, which is a mistake: twenty rooms of neoclassical interiors with original furniture, giving a domestic view of imperial life.

Because the programme rotates, checking what is currently showing before booking matters more here than at a fixed-collection museum.
