Vietnam Military History Museum

The Vietnam Military History Museum, established in 1956, showcases the nation’s military history from ancient times to the present. Located at Km 6+500 Thăng Long Boulevard in Hanoi, the museum features both indoor and outdoor exhibits, including military equipment like tanks and aircraft. Visitors can learn about Vietnam’s struggles for independence and its military strategies. The museum is open from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, closed on Mondays and Fridays. The Vietnam Military History Museum moved in 2024 from its cramped central Hanoi site to a vastly larger purpose-built campus on Thăng Long Boulevard, and the change transformed it. The outdoor display is the immediate draw: captured and operated aircraft, tanks, artillery and helicopters arranged across open ground, including the wreckage of downed American aircraft assembled into a sculptural mound. Inside, the collection runs from ancient resistance against Chinese dynasties through the French colonial wars, Điện Biên Phủ, the American war and after, with equipment, documents and reconstructed scenes.

The scale is considerable and largely outdoors, so shade, water and footwear matter — Hanoi's heat and humidity are a real factor. The new site is well outside the Old Quarter, roughly twenty minutes by car, which is the main practical consideration. It closes on Mondays and Fridays.

Bookable options generally handle the transport and pair the museum with other historical sites. Common combinations include Hỏa Lò Prison — the colonial-era jail later used for American prisoners of war, known sardonically as the Hanoi Hilton — and city landmark tours. Others extend to the incense-making village outside Hanoi for a change of pace.
