The Volkskundemuseum occupies a terrace of eight seventeenth-century almshouses in Bruges' quiet Sint-Anna quarter, each small room fitted out as a different trade or setting: a cobbler's, a milliner's, a cooper's workshop, a pharmacy, a sweet shop, a schoolroom and a working-class kitchen.
The period covered is the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the point is domestic and artisanal life rather than the medieval wealth the rest of Bruges trades on — how ordinary people in this city lived, worked and were schooled.
Sweets are made in the old confectioner's on certain days, and the museum's own inn, De Zwarte Kat, serves Belgian beer in a genuine period interior.
The Sint-Anna district around it is residential and largely free of the crowds around the Markt.
