Franco Zeffirelli directed opera, theatre and film across six decades — the Taming of the Shrew with Burton and Taylor, Romeo and Juliet, Brother Sun Sister Moon, La Traviata, and productions at La Scala and the Met that defined how those operas looked for a generation. The museum in Florence, his home city, holds over 300 works from his archive: stage designs, costume drawings, set models, sketches, photographs and correspondence.

The drawings are the substance of it. Zeffirelli trained as an architect and drew constantly, and his set and costume designs are finished works rather than working notes — dense, theatrical and beautiful on paper.

It occupies a restored former courthouse near the Uffizi, and it doubles as a cultural centre, so it also functions as a venue rather than only a display space.
