Madrid's National Archaeological Museum covers the Iberian Peninsula from prehistory to the nineteenth century, and its most famous object is the Lady of Elche — a limestone bust of a woman in elaborate headdress and jewellery, made by Iberian sculptors around the fourth century BC, found by accident in 1897 and unlike anything else from the ancient Mediterranean. She is displayed alone, and she repays the walk through the galleries.

The Treasure of Guarrazar, a hoard of Visigothic votive crowns in gold and precious stones, is the other standout, alongside strong Greek vase, Roman mosaic and Egyptian holdings, and Islamic material from al-Andalus.

Outside in the garden is a full-scale replica of the Altamira cave ceiling, made before the modern Neocueva in Cantabria, and free to visit.

The museum reopened in 2014 after a long renovation and is well presented with good English labelling, yet remains far quieter than the Prado a short walk away.
