9/11 Memorial Museum

Located at the World Trade Center site in New York City, the 9/11 Memorial Museum commemorates the nearly 3,000 victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The museum’s exhibitions feature artifacts, personal stories, and multimedia presentations that provide a comprehensive understanding of the events and their aftermath. Planning your visit

The 9/11 Memorial Museum is built into the archaeology of the site. Visitors descend seven storeys to bedrock, alongside the slurry wall — the original retaining structure that held back the Hudson and survived the collapse — and the last column removed from the site, covered in messages left by recovery workers. Two enormous tridents from the North Tower facade stand in the entrance hall.

The historical exhibition covers the day itself in sequence, using recordings, voicemails, photographs and objects: a crushed fire truck, recovered personal effects, the stairway survivors used to escape. The memorial exhibition, In Memoriam, is a room of photographs of every person killed, with a chamber where their names and stories are read aloud.

It is extremely difficult, and it is meant to be. Visitors with a personal connection to the events, and those travelling with children, should consider that carefully.
