People come to the Accademia for one statue, and it justifies the trip. Michelangelo's David stands at the end of a purpose-built tribune under a domed skylight, seventeen feet of Carrara marble carved from a block other sculptors had abandoned as ruined, finished when he was 26. Photographs mislead about scale and about the hands, which are deliberately oversized, and about the tension in the figure — this is the moment before the fight, not after it.

The approach matters. The corridor leading to him is lined with Michelangelo's unfinished Prisoners, figures half-emerged from rough stone, which makes the finished work at the end read as an act of extraction.

Beyond that, the museum holds Florentine painting including Botticelli and Ghirlandaio, and a Museum of Musical Instruments with pieces by Stradivari and by Bartolomeo Cristofori, who invented the piano.
