The Wax Museum of Barcelona occupies a neoclassical nineteenth-century bank building at the bottom of La Rambla, near the port, and it has been operating since 1972 — long enough to have become a piece of Barcelona history in its own right.

Over 150 figures across 28 sets cover historical figures, Spanish and Catalan personalities, film and fantasy characters, with a general leaning toward the theatrical rather than the celebrity-portrait approach of the international chains. A reworking in recent years modernised parts of it while keeping the older tableaux that regulars remember.

The building's grand interiors and staircases carry much of the atmosphere.

Attached is the Bosc de les Fades, a bar decorated as an enchanted forest with tree trunks, grottoes and mirrors — a genuinely odd and long-standing Barcelona institution that many people visit without ever entering the museum.
