Turin has a serious claim to be Europe's chocolate capital. The Savoy court adopted chocolate in the sixteenth century, the city developed the technology and the trade, and in 1806 — when Napoleon's continental blockade made cacao scarce — Turin confectioners stretched it with the hazelnuts of the surrounding Langhe hills, producing gianduja. Nutella descends directly from that invention.

Choco-Story Torino covers cacao history broadly, with over 700 objects, but the gianduja material is the local distinction, along with bicerin — the layered Turin drink of espresso, drinking chocolate and cream, served in the historic cafes since the eighteenth century.

Demonstrations and tastings run through the visit, and workshops are available.

Turin's arcaded streets hold several of the oldest cafes in Italy, which are the natural continuation of a visit here.
