The Hallwyl Museum, located in central Stockholm, is a preserved aristocratic residence showcasing Wilhelmina von Hallwyl’s extensive art collection, offering a glimpse into early 20th-century Swedish nobility.

Wilhelmina von Hallwyl collected everything and catalogued all of it. The daughter of a timber millionaire, she spent decades acquiring paintings, arms, ceramics, silver, furniture and curiosities, and then did something unusual: she commissioned a 78-volume scholarly catalogue of her own collection, had the house photographed room by room, and donated the whole thing to the Swedish state in 1920 on condition that nothing be moved.

Nothing has been. The result is a Stockholm mansion of the 1890s preserved with a completeness few historic houses achieve — not just the state rooms with their old master paintings and Chinese porcelain, but the kitchens, the bathrooms with their early plumbing, the servants' quarters and the billiard room, all exactly as the family used them. Even the toothbrushes are catalogued.

The building had electric light, telephones and central heating from the start, which makes it a document of upper-class technological modernity as much as of taste.

It sits centrally on Hamngatan, a few minutes from the royal palace. Allow ninety minutes; guided tours are worthwhile given how much detail the rooms carry. The main booking is an entry ticket. Current availability is shown below.
