Alfred Nobel invented dynamite, grew wealthy on explosives, and reportedly read a mistaken obituary describing him as a merchant of death — after which he left almost his entire fortune to fund prizes in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace.
The Nobel Prize Museum occupies the old stock exchange building on Stortorget in Gamla Stan, where the Swedish Academy still meets to choose the literature laureate. Objects donated by laureates are carried around the ceiling on a moving cable system, so the collection circulates overhead through the day.
The exhibitions cover the prizes, the laureates and the ideas behind the awarded work, with particular attention to creativity and how discoveries actually happen.
The Bistro Nobel serves the ice cream from the Nobel banquet, and laureates sign the undersides of the chairs.
The peace prize is awarded in Oslo, not Stockholm, which surprises people.
