The Rafael Larco Herrera Archaeological Museum, founded in 1926, houses a vast collection of pre-Columbian artifacts, including ceramics, textiles, and metals, in an 18th-century mansion in Lima’s Pueblo Libre district.

Planning your visit

The Larco Museum is the best introduction to pre-Columbian Peru anywhere, and it is arranged with unusual generosity. Founded in 1926 by Rafael Larco Hoyle in an eighteenth-century mansion built over a seventh-century pyramid in Pueblo Libre, it holds around 45,000 objects covering 5,000 years — Cupisnique, Chavín, Nazca, Moche, Chimú and Inca. Uniquely, the storage is open to visitors: rather than hiding the reserve collection, the museum lets you walk through rooms of floor-to-ceiling shelving holding tens of thousands of ceramics, which conveys the scale of Andean production in a way selected highlights never could.

The Moche portrait vessels are the standout — individually modelled ceramic heads of real people, with scars, expressions and ages, made 1,500 years ago and startlingly present. The gold and silver gallery holds ceremonial regalia. A separate pavilion houses the erotic ceramics collection, displayed matter-of-factly.

The gardens are covered in bougainvillea and the on-site restaurant is genuinely good, which makes this an easy place to spend an afternoon rather than an hour.

Bookable options include half-day private tours from central Lima, guided city tours combining the museum with Callao and the Real Felipe fortress, and longer multi-day itineraries that use it as the cultural anchor before travelling to Nazca or Paracas. Current availability is shown below.
