MAU is a museum without rooms. Since 1995 the Borgo Campidoglio, a working-class district of low houses in Turin, has been progressively covered with murals — over 200 works by more than 100 artists painted directly onto the walls of ordinary buildings, with residents' consent, turning the neighbourhood itself into the collection.

The works range from figurative to abstract, and the project has involved established Italian artists alongside street practitioners. Because the murals are exposed, they deteriorate and are periodically restored or replaced, so the museum is genuinely a changing entity rather than a fixed display.

The district is a survival: a nineteenth-century workers' quarter of narrow streets and small houses that escaped the redevelopment that reshaped much of Turin.
