The Museum of Oslo occupies Frogner Manor, an eighteenth-century farm estate that the city grew around and eventually absorbed — the buildings now sit inside Frogner Park, surrounded by Gustav Vigeland's sculpture installation, which is what most visitors come to the park to see.

The museum covers Oslo's thousand-year history: the medieval town, the fire that destroyed it, its rebuilding as Christiania under Danish rule, industrialisation, the working-class east and bourgeois west, immigration, and the city's contemporary transformation. Paintings, photographs, models and objects carry it, with substantial attention to ordinary inhabitants rather than institutions.

The Theatre Museum shares the site, covering Norwegian stage history including Ibsen's premieres.

Admission is free, and the manor courtyard and buildings are attractive in themselves.

For visitors, the practical point is that you are almost certainly going to Frogner Park anyway for the Vigeland sculptures, and the museum is a hundred metres away — most people walk past without noticing it.
