Madrid's railway museum occupies Delicias station, an 1880 terminus with an iron and glass train shed by a French engineering firm — the building is among the finest surviving examples of nineteenth-century railway architecture in Spain, and the collection sits beneath its span on the original platforms and tracks.
Over 30 locomotives and substantial rolling stock cover Spanish railway history: steam engines from the earliest lines, electric and diesel traction, the royal train, and carriages including a sleeping car and a hospital coach.
Spain's broad gauge, chosen in the nineteenth century and different from the rest of Europe, shaped the network's development and its later high-speed programme, which switched to standard gauge.
