Trick art is a Japanese genre with real technique behind it: paintings executed in forced perspective and anamorphosis so that, viewed from a marked spot through a camera, the two-dimensional image reads as three-dimensional and the visitor appears to be inside it.
The Odaiba museum applies it to an Edo-period theme — ukiyo-e scenes, ninja, samurai, ghosts and folk tales — alongside the standard illusions of falling, shrinking and being eaten. Staff show visitors where to stand and how to pose, which makes a real difference to the results.
It is straightforwardly a photo attraction and is enjoyable on those terms, particularly with children.
