The Azerbaijan Railway Museum occupies Sabunchu station in Baku, and the building is the exhibit as much as the collection. Built in 1926 in a striking modernist style, it served the Baku-Sabunchu line — electrified in 1926, the first electrified railway in the Soviet Union and in the whole of the Russian and Soviet space, laid to move oil workers to the Sabunchu fields.
That context matters: Baku's railways were built for oil, and the network's history is the history of the industry that made the city.
The museum, opened in 2019 after restoration, displays locomotive and rolling stock models, signalling equipment, uniforms, tickets, archival photographs and documents tracing the network from its first line in 1880 through the Soviet period to the modern Baku-Tbilisi-Kars route.
Rolling stock is displayed outside.
