Azerbaijan has grown grapes for millennia, and archaeological evidence for winemaking in the South Caucasus is among the oldest anywhere. The Wine Museum in Baku covers that history and, more distinctively, the Soviet period — when Azerbaijan was a major producer within the USSR, supplying vast quantities across the union, before Gorbachev's anti-alcohol campaign of the mid-1980s ordered vineyards uprooted and devastated the industry.
The collection includes Soviet-era bottles, labels, production equipment and archival material, alongside older winemaking implements and material on the country's indigenous grape varieties.
Tastings are integral, covering both historic Soviet vintages and the contemporary revival, which has been gathering pace as producers replant native varieties such as Madrasa and Bayanshira.
