The Thyssen-Bornemisza completes Madrid's Golden Triangle, and it is arguably the most useful of the three for a visitor with one day. Where the Prado covers Spanish and European old masters and the Reina Sofía the twentieth century, the Thyssen fills every gap between them: a private collection assembled across two generations of the Thyssen-Bornemisza family, running from thirteenth-century Italian gold-ground panels through Dürer, Holbein and Caravaggio, into Impressionism with Monet, Degas and Van Gogh, and on to Hopper, Rothko and Lichtenstein. Ghirlandaio's Portrait of Giovanna Tornabuoni and Van Eyck's Annunciation diptych are among the best-known works.

The collection is hung chronologically from the top floor down, which is unusual and genuinely useful — walking down through the building moves you forward through seven centuries in order, so each movement arrives as a response to the one above it. That structure makes the Thyssen the single best place in Madrid to see how European painting actually developed, rather than admiring isolated masterpieces. It is also less crowded than the Prado, and at a comfortable pace takes around two hours.

Because the collection is built as a narrative, guided formats add more here than at a museum of highlights. Bookable options include guided tours with admission included, skip-the-line guided tours, and small-group formats — some capped at around seven people, which keeps the group close enough to hear in the smaller upstairs rooms. Private tours allow the route to be tailored, useful if your interest sits in one period rather than the sweep. The museum stands directly across the Paseo del Prado from the Prado itself, a two-minute walk, so pairing them in a single day is straightforward and many visitors do exactly that.
