The Picasso Museum in Barcelona is not where you go for Guernica or the late work — it's where you go to understand how Picasso became Picasso. The collection is the most comprehensive anywhere of his early years, including the academic training pieces he made as a teenager in Barcelona, the Blue Period, and the complete Las Meninas series. It occupies five linked medieval palaces in El Born, which is part of the appeal and also why the interior is a warren of small rooms that fill quickly.

Bookable options mostly combine the museum with the streets around it. Skip-the-line guided tours handle the queue on the narrow Carrer Montcada entrance. Walking tours trace Picasso's own Barcelona — the studios and haunts of his student years — before entering the museum with tickets included.
