Don and Mera Rubell began buying contemporary art in 1964 on a schoolteacher's and a doctor-in-training's income, setting aside a small weekly sum, and built one of the most significant private collections in the world by consistently buying artists early — Basquiat, Haring, Koons, Sherman, Kusama, Kehinde Wiley and many others acquired before the market caught up.
The Miami museum opened in its current form in 2019 in a converted industrial complex in Allapattah, with 36 galleries across 100,000 square feet. Exhibitions rotate from the collection rather than presenting a fixed hang, and the artist-in-residence programme means new work is produced on site.
The Kusama infinity rooms are the most-booked element and require timed entry.
