The Swedish History Museum holds over ten million objects, and its Viking exhibition is the reason most visitors come — genuine material from burials and hoards rather than reconstruction, covering trade, raiding, settlement, religion and daily life, with the argument that the raiding was a fraction of what these societies did.
The Gold Room is the museum's treasure: a vault holding some 50 kilograms of gold and 250 of silver, including the collars of Möne, gold bracteates, and hoards buried across a millennium and recovered from Swedish soil.
The medieval church art collection is exceptional and rarely emphasised — painted altarpieces, wooden saints and liturgical objects gathered from parish churches, forming one of the largest such holdings in Europe.
